Christian Bale + Taye Diggs + fantastic hand-to-hand gun battle ending = Equilibrium. It’s $5.99 at Bestbuy right now, if you’re a movie addict like me and can’t pass up an intriguing Christian Bale flick for a good price.
It’s an interesting movie, with a lot of eye-candy for the ladies (obviously), and action for the men.
Aww-yeah.
We also watched Ultraviolet for the first time (yes, apparently it’s futuristic movie night in the Grfxho household). UV was interesting, but seemed to try too hard to be artsy in some parts. I’m not familiar with the comic book to say whether that was how it should have been. I enjoyed some of the visual effects, don’t get me wrong, but it was so damn dark for some scenes I had a hard time following the action… and as far as I know, it was an action flick and therefore making it so dark I couldn’t see the action sort of defeats the purpose, don’t you think?
I also watched The Prestige (yes, Christian Bale again! Are you beginning to see a pattern…?) and while interesting and fairly decent in some parts, it was also way too long and WAY too predictable. There were some fantastic performances in it though, and it was fun to see Christian using something a bit closer to his native Welsh accent.
The Departed was another movie I watched in the last week. It was fantastic, as expected, but the very surprising part was just how phenomenal Leonardo Dicaprio was in it. I mean, he was fantastic. It’s probably one of his best jobs since What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?… It had a couple twists in it, although they came so fast and all in a row at the end that it didn’t really give you time to fully embrace the impact before the movie was over.
Another recently watched movie was Master and Commander. Russel Crow, ship, chasing pirates. I owned it for several months before I could bring myself to watch it, expecting some boring period naval flick with pretty sea voyage scenes and some sort of storyline I’d yawn at. I was wrong (take in this moment, folks, it’s rare I’ll say that phrase). It was very enjoyable, very endearing in parts, very exciting in others, and the whole family enjoyed it–even The Boy… although he was a bit confused about the ending, and didn’t seem to get the concept that the “adventure continues” but it’s left for you to imagine. I think he’s now waiting for the sequel a la Pirates of the Caribbean. He’s got a long wait.
…Now Jer’s watching Beastie Boys’ videos… I swear, I leave the room for 10 minutes to blog, and white boy nerd rap takes over movie night…

Remember that night at Murphy’s when we discussed “If he ever showed up on my doorstep…”? I think we had a few Sloe Gin Fizzes that night (ans as in “few” I mean we killed the bottle.) Anyway, you had double impact in The Prestige: Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman. This move has been sitting in OnDemand for some time now. I keep debating it because it is long regardless of the eye candy. I’m glad I now have a review that I trust.
I would say “ah yes.. I remember that night well…” But I don’t. I vaguely remember being upset that they ran out of sloe gin, I vaguely remember talking about our “boyfriends”… was this the night with those guys I spilled stuff on? Or was that a different night? I think I introduced you to sloe gin the time or two (three?) AFTER the night I threw my drink in that guy’s lap. Anyway… it’s good to have you along for the blog-ride, Sassy.
Back to movies/eye-candy…Hugh Jackman doesn’t do much for me, although I admit I don’t absolutely object to watching him on screen. But it’s not quite like Christian Bale or Clive Owen. Didn’t Hugh do something with Meg Ryan where there was time-travel involved and he played some prince who had to adjust to modern life for her? I never saw it, but the idea kind of killed the whole Hugh Jackman attraction for me. I love him as Wolverine, but knowing he could be some prancy romantic prince the next time I saw him…well, it’s a turn off.
Of course, Clive Owen is one of those guys I feel really unclean for being attracted to, but he’s got that certain IT-factor (for me at least)…and maybe the unclean bit is part of that–I can’t say for certain. I tend to find the dysfunctional characters he plays really attractive.
This says a lot about me, I think.
